WP2 Update

October 21, 2024|

Update on the work done in WP2 "Lab Scale Manufacturing Process Optimisation" Our WP2 team, led by Guiomar Hernández, has made steady progress in optimizing key processes for developing more efficient anode and cathode materials—two essential components that work together to store and release energy in batteries. In a typical battery, the anode and cathode act like storage tanks, each holding specific types of ions. The anode (usually made from graphite or other carbon materials) releases electrons during discharge, powering devices, while the cathode (often containing metals like lithium, nickel, or manganese) accepts these electrons, storing energy within the battery. Together, these materials must not only hold a large charge but also maintain stability through thousands of cycles. In this phase, we’ve worked on refining the formulation for these materials, focusing on their durability and performance in both dry and wet processing. We’ve conducted tests to evaluate their stability over time and charging capabilities, and the results are promising. These optimizations are now being shared with the WP3 team for further development and scaling up, as we continue to work [...]

LiPlanet workshop on Sustainable Electrode / Cell Production

September 25, 2024|

LiPlanet workshop on Sustainable Electrode / Cell Production On September 19th, NoVOC together with LiPLANET e.V. organized a workshop on sustainable electrode and cell production in Braunschweig, Germany, right after the NoVOC Year 2 General Assembly meeting the day before. Target group for this workshop were all partners of the projects from the battery heroes project cluster (NoVOC, greenSPEED, BatWoMan, GIGAGREEN, BatMachine and GigaBat) as well as the LiPLANET network partners. During this networking workshop we connected experts from different European projects and the European battery pilot lines. Besides the engaging networking, we informed about the latest developments within the LiPLANET network and the Battery Heroes projects and discussed technological approaches and challenges across the topic of sustainable electrode and cell production. The agenda covered introduction presentations from the participating projects, an impulse overview presentation by Prof. Arno Kwade from the Institute of Particle Technology (iPAT) at TU Braunschweig and different workshop elements. Stay tuned for the output of this workshop, which will be published in the next months!!

NoVOC Year 2 General Assembly meeting in Braunschweig

September 24, 2024|

NoVOC partners reunited for the Year 2 General Assembly meeting in Braunschweig, Germany On September 17 and 18 we held our Year 2 General Assembly meeting hosted by the Institute of Particle Technology at the Technical University Braunschweig in Braunschweig, Germany. We had two days of project updates, engaging discussions and inspiring working sessions, where we generated a clearer picture and key criteria for more sustainable battery production processes as well as key performance parameters. One of the highlights was also a site visit at the Battery Lab Factory as well as the relatively new CircularLab. For more info on the NoVOC project, follow us on LinkedIn and X.

Consolidated requirements for the NoVOC cells available

August 27, 2024|

Empowering the Future of Sustainable Battery Manufacturing As we continue to push the boundaries of innovation, the NoVOC project is making significant strides in ensuring that the future of battery manufacturing is not only efficient but also sustainable from start to finish. In one of our first deliverables, we've defined critical requirements for designing batteries that align with the European Battery Regulation. Our focus? A cradle-to-grave life cycle that enhances both manufacturing efficiency and recyclability. Key highlights include: Compliance with the new European Battery Regulation, ensuring mandatory recycled content in batteries. Innovative approaches to improve the recyclability of NoVOC batteries, focusing on safer, simpler processes. Practical insights for integrating these sustainable practices right from the battery design phase. This deliverable serves as an interactive guide for all our partners, helping us move closer to a fully closed-loop battery life cycle, making a lasting impact on the environment and the future of electric vehicles. A special shoutout to our WP leader Romain Chane Ki Chune at SNAM and the whole WP5 team including experts at our coordinating entity RISE. Learn [...]

Exploring Innovation in Battery Production: NoVOC at the VDMA Annual Conference 2024

June 30, 2024|

At the end of June, Svenja Schreiber represented the NoVOC project at the VDMA Annual Conference Battery Production 2024 in Oberkochen, Germany. This event brought together over 80 participants from industry and research to discuss cutting-edge technologies, market trends, and challenges in battery production. A key feature of the conference was its interactive market stands, where attendees could explore diverse topics, engage in discussions, and network with experts. Svenja’s participation provided her and us with valuable insights into innovative measuring methods and upcoming trends in battery production technologies, particularly in relation to quality assurance—a critical factor for creating high-performance, long-lasting batteries. One of the highlights was a guided tour showcasing ZEISS Industrial Quality Solutions. This session delved into advanced metrology technologies like 3D X-ray inspection and industrial microscopy for material analysis. These solutions are essential for improving battery production processes, ensuring reliability, and optimizing performance. Svenja’s active involvement enabled her to strengthen connections with industry partners and stay informed about state-of-the-art tools and practices. These learnings directly support our efforts in advancing sustainable electrode manufacturing processes and contribute to [...]
